“I never got questioned about my heritage in Amerikkka as much as I’ve been questioned in Aotearoa, and as annoying as it is to constantly be on the receiving end of that question, I’m more frustrated with not really knowing the answer myself. Uncovering my history is bigger than genealogy, it’s an act of rebellion against a hegemony, it’s that urge to listen to gospel, it’s sankofa, it’s foli. music, dancing, people, culture.” - Jovis

“This idea came to me a little while after completing the 10 week journey to @thewellbysesamathlo . As well as a few conversation with Jovis & Diana 🤎

My roots are so intertwined yet so divided. I am of Igbo & yoruba descent, two different languages yet both powerful, magical & beautiful kingdoms rooted in the Giant of Africa.
The way I’ve been nurturing & nourishing my roots has been surrounding myself around queer diasporic bbs who dream to use their creative gifts in vast ways & doing ancestral” - Mary Adeosun
